Regular cars are not allowed on this route, so visitors typically book a guided tour or hire a local driver with experience navigating these challenging roads.
By Guided Tour:
Many visitors opt to join a guided tour from nearby towns like Brinchang or Tanah Rata. These tours include 4×4 transport up to the Mossy Forest, and guides often provide insight into the local flora and fauna. It’s a convenient and safe way to visit, especially given the difficulty of the terrain. We organized it through our hotel the Smoke House in the Cameron Highlands
Self-Drive:
If you prefer a more independent approach, you can hire a 4×4 vehicle in the Cameron Highlands. However, be prepared for a bumpy ride, as the road leading up to the Mossy Forest is unpaved and muddy, with sharp turns and steep inclines. Also be aware although we did see a couple of private cars up there we were also told / read that private cars are not allowed. So we would strongly recommend a guided tour.
It also offers other Cameron Highland highlights like the tea plantations and strawberry farms as well.
Exercise caution and avoid driving up during or right after heavy rain, as conditions can become dangerous.
The entrance to the Mossy Forest is marked by a small signboard, and parking is available at the base of the boardwalk trail. From there, you’ll begin your walk into this misty, Tolkien-esque landscape.
