Discovering Mirror Lake in Ipoh: A Hidden Gem Surrounded by Limestone Cliffs

Tasik Cermin, or Mirror Lake, is a lesser-known spot in Ipoh that offers visitors a peaceful and secluded setting surrounded by limestone cliffs. The calm waters of the lake create a mirror-like reflection, giving it its name and making it a popular place for photography and a quiet break in nature.

During our visit, we found Mirror Lake to be a great escape from the city, with its tranquil atmosphere and beautiful scenery. In this guide, I’ll walk through how to get there, what to expect, and some tips to help you make the most of your visit.

How to Get There: Reaching Mirror Lake

Getting to Mirror Lake isn’t too difficult, but it’s tucked away within an old quarry, making it feel a bit hidden. It’s located about 15-20 minutes from Ipoh’s city centre, and you’ll need to pass through a tunnel carved into the limestone to reach the lake. There’s no obvious signage, so using GPS or asking locals for directions can be helpful. We took it as a stop to our wonderful hotel the Tui Haven in Ipoh after we left the smoke house hotel in the Cameron Highlands.

Once you arrive, parking is available near the entrance, and from there, it’s a short walk through the tunnel to the lake. The entrance fee is 12 Myr for tourists and 4/5 MYR for locals ( quite a difference there) but access may sometimes be restricted for maintenance, so it’s a good idea to check before heading out.

First Impressions

As you approach Mirror Lake, the experience starts with a walk through a limestone tunnel that opens up to a stunning view of the lake. The stillness of the water and the steep limestone cliffs surrounding it make for an impressive sight. The reflections on the lake are what stand out the most, with the cliffs and trees perfectly mirrored in the calm water, giving the area a serene and almost untouched feel.

The atmosphere is peaceful, with very little noise except for the occasional sound of birds or the wind rustling through the trees. It’s easy to see why this spot has become a favourite for photographers—on a clear day, the reflections in the water are almost flawless, creating a perfect photo opportunity.

What to Expect: A Tranquil Escape into Nature

Mirror Lake offers more than just a quiet place to enjoy nature—it’s also possible to take a boat trip on the lake. These boat rides allow visitors to get a closer view of the limestone cliffs and surrounding greenery from the water, adding to the experience. The boat trips are usually short but provide a unique perspective of the lake’s stunning reflections.

The Boat rides onto both lakes ( mirror Lake 2 being accessed by a tunnel) are typically offered by local operators, and you can pay on-site.

The prices when we went were 30 MYR for tourists and 25 MYR for locals and a 12 MYR to just go in on foot.

Be sure to bring cash, as it’s the easiest way to pay for these activities. The boat trip is a great way to fully appreciate the beauty of the lake from a different angle and is highly recommended if you want to take in more of the scenery. Although it is over priced for what it is.

Best Time to Visit: Timing Your Trip for the Best Experience

The best time to visit Mirror Lake is early in the morning. During this time, the water is usually at its calmest, creating the best reflection of the cliffs and surrounding trees. The light is softer in the morning, making it ideal for photography and a more peaceful experience before the crowds start to arrive.

Visiting on weekdays is also a good idea if you want to avoid the busier weekends when more people, including photographers and locals, come to enjoy the lake. The weather in Ipoh can be unpredictable, so it’s always worth checking the forecast beforehand—rainy days can cause the water to be less reflective, and the tunnel can become slippery.

Mirror Lake is a dream location for photography, especially if you’re aiming to capture the famous reflections on the water. To get the best results:

• Morning Light: Early morning offers the best lighting conditions for photography. The softer, natural light helps highlight the cliffs and surrounding trees without harsh shadows.
• Best Angles: Position yourself at the water’s edge for the clearest reflection shots. Try framing the lake with the limestone cliffs or greenery to add depth to your photos.

• What to Bring: A camera or smartphone for capturing the stunning reflections is a must. Also, bring along water and light snacks, as there are no shops or facilities near the lake. If you plan to take a boat trip, having cash on hand is helpful, as most local operators don’t accept cards.
• Safety Considerations: The limestone tunnel can be slippery after rain, so be cautious when walking through it. It’s best to visit on dry days to avoid muddy conditions around the lake.
• Respect the Environment: Mirror Lake is a peaceful, natural spot, so it’s important to leave no trace. Be mindful of keeping the area clean and undisturbed for future visitors.

The Rainbow Stairs, Petting Zoo, and Adventure Area

During your visit to Mirror Lake, you may also notice some additional attractions that are either already in place or in development, adding extra experiences to your trip.

• The Rainbow Stairs: One of the eye-catching features near Mirror Lake is the brightly coloured free standing Rainbow Stairs, which lead up to a higher viewing platform. The stairs are great for photos and offer a fun way to explore the area. From the top, you can enjoy an elevated view of the surrounding landscape
• Petting Zoo: If you’re visiting with family or just enjoy interacting with animals, there’s a small petting zoo nearby. Here, you can find a variety of animals including ponies, providing a fun stop for children and animal lovers.
• Cart Track and Adventure Area (Under Construction): Currently, there’s a new adventure area in development, which includes a cart track ( i think) for some added excitement. Though still under construction during our visit, it looks like it will offer more activities for thrill-seekers and families once completed. This area is set to feature adventure-based attractions, making it a fun spot to revisit in the future once it’s fully operational.

While Mirror Lake is a tranquil escape, there are other interesting attractions nearby that are worth visiting while you’re in Ipoh:

• Kek Lok Tong Cave Temple: Just a short drive from Mirror Lake, Kek Lok Tong is a large cave temple with impressive caverns and beautiful gardens. It’s a peaceful spot with a mix of religious significance and natural beauty.
