If you start your Reykjavik accommodation search by opening a map of the central city area, prepare yourself for serious price shock. A standard, no-frills 3-star hotel right in the centre of Reykjavik can routinely be anywhere from $300 to $400 a night. Want a basic 4-star room or a place with slightly more elbow…
If you have ever looked into Oceania Cruises, you probably know they lean heavily into their reputation for their restaurants having “The Finest Cuisine at Sea.“ With food being such a massive part of the experience, we wanted to see if it actually holds up in practice. We just wrapped up a 12-night cruise from…
The 2026 season marks an aggressive turning point for maritime travel around the Land of Fire and Ice. To combat overtourism and protect its fragile volcanic ecosystems, the Icelandic government has fully implemented mandatory restrictions and updated passenger fees across all coastal regions. For the DIY cruiser, this means navigating an environment where ship arrivals…
Siglufjordur (often called “Siglo”) is a town that feels like a film set tucked into a narrow fjord at the northern tip of the Tröllaskagi Peninsula. Once the herring fishing capital of the world, it was so isolated that it was only accessible by sea until 1967. Today, it is one of Iceland’s most picturesque…
Grímsey is Iceland’s northernmost inhabited outpost, a tiny speck of basalt and grass that straddles the Arctic Circle. For many 2026 cruisers, the appeal of this island is purely geographical: it is the only place in Iceland where you can officially step into the Arctic. However, those who look beyond the milestone will find a…
Patreksfjordur ( or more accuratly Patreksfjörður ) is the ultimate “frontier” port of Iceland. For 2026/2027, Patreksfjordur has transitioned from a…
Heimaey is one of the most dramatic arrivals in all of Iceland. As your ship navigates the narrow, cliff-walled entrance to the harbor, you are sailing past the very lava flows that nearly sealed the town off forever during the cataclysmic 1973 eruption of Eldfell. The Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar) are a volcanic archipelago born of…
Grundarfjörður (often spelled Grundarfjordur for our engish keyboards) has plenty of dramatic Icelandic scenery, serving as the primary maritime entrance to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula – often referred to as “Iceland in Miniature.” In 2026, Grundarfjordur remains a boutique port that balances modern cruise logistics with a commitment to preserving its small-town atmosphere. Unlike the industrial…
Seydisfjordur (Icelandic spelling is Seyðisfjörður) is the undisputed “hidden gem” of East Iceland, tucked away at the innermost point of a breathtaking 17-kilometer fjord. Seydisfjordur is a living art gallery, famous for its rows of vibrant, multi-colored Norwegian-style wooden houses and a creative community that punches far above its weight. For the 2026 season, Seydisfjordur…
