We booked a driver which it possible through tour shops in the area for a reasonable price, also you can book a grab for about 205 MYR or 45 USD one way but the issue here may be being able to find a grab to bring you back to Penang as Bukit Merah is less busy. There will be taxis but these might cost a little more.

By Car:

• From Kuala Lumpur: The drive from Kuala Lumpur to Bukit Merah takes approximately 3 to 4 hours via the North-South Expressway (NSE). Exit at the Taiping Utara exit and follow the signs to Bukit Merah Laketown Resort, where Orangutan Island is located.
• From Penang: It’s a shorter drive from Penang, typically around 1 to 1.5 hours. Take the NSE south towards Ipoh and exit at Taiping Utara, then proceed as above.

By Public Transport:

• Buses: There are bus services available from major terminals in Kuala Lumpur and Penang that drop you near Bukit Merah. From the bus stop, you may need to take a short taxi ride to reach the resort.
• Train: The nearest train station is in Taiping. From there, you can catch a taxi to Bukit Merah, which is about 15 kilometers away.

Currently the Entry ticket to Orangutan island costs 30 Myr or about 7 USD. for a Malaysian National, and about 8 USD or 36 MYR for non Residents. Though these can of course change and we checked the prices in Mid 2024.

This also included the boat trip across to the little island, and back!

Added bonus if you are over 55 you are classed as a senior and get to pay just 15 MYR or 3 or so USD as well.

Why We loved it.

We personally have been lucky enough to see orangutangs in both Sabah, in Malaysia, and in Sarawak and Bukit Bukit Merah is still a great day out. The reverse zoo concept with the humans in the cages is a great idea and really shows an idea for other animal parks.

The thing we really enjoyed was the reaction of my parents who had never seen orangutang’s in the wild ( ir semi wild as it turns out) As we were not heading to Borneo with them to be able to do this just an hour or so from our front door was really awesome.

So if you are in Penang, and you are not heading to Sabah, Indonesia or Sarawak then book a tour, grab a grab, or hire a car and head down there. Where you are in the zoo and not the animals!
