In this guide, we’ll explore some of our best places to eat on Koh Lipe, sharing personal favorites and hidden gems that enhance your visit to this tropical haven.
This is in Sharp contrast to the Perhentian Islands on the other side of Malaysia and Thailand which while they have the stunning sea and sand, lets themselves down in the food department. you can check out these here.
We have split this guide up into Food types just for ease, and if we haven’t got a restaurant on here it doesn’t means it is no good, it means we haven’t tried it yet!
We can’t put any restaurants to miss as we have never had a bad meal on Koh Lipe and have been there 3 times!
Traditional Thai Cuisine
Nee Papaya Thai Food and BBQ – Just Right at End of Walking Street
For a laid-back meal that packs a very local flavor punch, Nee Papaya Thai Food and BBQ is the spot. This is where traditional Thai cooking meets casual barbecue. The atmosphere is relaxed, perfect for unwinding after a day in the sun.
It’s the kind of place where you can dig into your meal while still in your flip-flops. However be prepared to point at the menu as language barriers are the rule of the day. ( it makes it more of an adventure! not being sure what exactly you ordered.)
Menu Recommendation: Don’t miss the Grilled and BBQ Seafood, which are a favorite here. make sure its weighed for you first though. We love the Morning Glory veggies as well, spicy and healthy that’s two ticks!
Plenty of local herbs and spices are used, giving them a unique Thai twist, and serve with rice. For starters, the Papaya Salad is fresh and spicy—a classic Thai dish that’s both refreshing and zingy.
Prices are reasonable here and its located just off walking street ( Turn Right at the 7-11 at the end)
Bundhaya Villas Restaurant – Pattaya Beach
Right on Pattaya beach, and where the ferries often come in to Koh Lipe, Bundhaya Villas Restaurant offers a fantastic view and even better food.
It’s all about authentic Thai dishes prepared with fresh, local ingredients ( although being a re4soprt restaurant they offer Chinese and International as well ) The setting is easygoing and perfect for a relaxing dinner with the sound of the waves as your backdrop.
Menu Recommendation: Try the Tom Yum Goong, a famous Thai soup that’s both spicy and sour, loaded with shrimp and local spices.
For something a bit heartier, the Pad Thai here is a great choice. It’s packed with flavors and noodles, making it a fulfilling meal.
Seafood Specialties
On The Rocks Restaurant at Serendipity – Sunrise Beach
On The Rocks Restaurant at Serendipity stands out not just for its exceptional seafood but also for its stunning location perched 6 metres up on the rocks. It’s a perfect spot for enjoying a meal while watching the sunset.
The restaurant offers a quiet relaxed, friendly environment where the seafood is always fresh and the views are even better. We actually always choose this side to stay on ( Sunrise beach). It is at the far end of the beach.
Menu Recommendation: The Seafood is a must-try here. It includes a variety of the day’s catch, such as prawns, squid, and fish, grilled or streamed to perfection and served with a side of garlic butter and local spices. It’s ideal for sharing or indulging on your own if you’re particularly hungry.
The Cove Bistro – Sunrise Beach
Situated close to the water’s edge, and very close to the On the Rocks above, The Cove Bistro is all about fresh catches and creative presentations.
The ambiance is casual and inviting, with open-air seating that allows you to enjoy the cool sea breeze as you dine. It’s a great place for a laid-back meal that still feels special. it is also in a resort ( idylic resort) and next to 2 more great resorts as well. We have stayed in both the Anda Resort and the Mali Resort Sunrise Beach./
Menu Recommendation: The signature dish to try here is the King Prawn Curry, which features large, succulent prawns in a rich and creamy curry sauce, infused with Thai herbs and spices. For a lighter option, the Fish Ceviche, marinated in lime and coconut, offers a refreshing taste of the sea.
International Flavors to eat on Koh Lipe
Bombay Indian on Koh Lipe – Left at End Of walking Street
For a taste of authentic Indian cuisine, Bombay Indian on Koh Lipe is the place to go. This restaurant brings the rich flavors of India to the island, serving classic dishes that are both comforting and exotic. It has an Astonishing 4.8 rating on trip advisor and the food is both tasty and well priced
The atmosphere is casual, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy a flavorful meal.
Menu Recommendation: Definitely try the Chicken Tikka Masala, which is creamy, spicy, and full of flavor. It’s served with basmati rice or naan bread, perfect for soaking up the delicious sauce. Another great choice is the Vegetable Biryani, a fragrant rice dish loaded with fresh vegetables and aromatic spices.
The Box – Walking Street
The Box is known for its contemporary approach and stylish setting, attracting those who appreciate a modern dining experience.
This restaurant offers a menu that blends Thai ingredients with international mainly Spanish and European dishes, creating unique flavors that stand out in Koh Lipe’s culinary scene.
Menu Recommendation: The Tuna steak at The Box is a must-try. It’s served with a Quinoa Salad and and homemade barbecue sauce, making it a hearty meal for any time of day.
We have eaten here a lot on our visits to Koh Lipe and the menu is well thought out and although pricier than other places it is a step above many other restaurants on the island.
Although we love Thai Food, when we are not eating that then we are coming here.
One tip it does get busy so you may need to book!
Elephant Bar Restaurant
Elephant Bar Restaurant is a popular spot among travelers looking for a comfortable and friendly environment to enjoy a meal or a drink. The bar is actually an old fishing boat which is a great touch.
Known for its eclectic menu that combines flavors from both Thai and Western cuisines, Elephant Bar is the go-to place for those who want a break from traditional Thai food without straying too far from the local flavors.
Menu Recommendation: One of the must-try dishes at Elephant Bar aside from their famous Burger, known for its juicy patty and gourmet toppings, is the pork tacos. ( picture below) they are so good!
It’s a hearty choice for anyone craving Western comfort food. Additionally, the Chicken Satay, served with a creamy peanut sauce, offers a taste of local cuisine with a familiar twist.
For a refreshing drink, their Mojito, made with fresh mint and lime, is perfect for cooling down on a hot day.
Beachside Dining
Castaway Restaurant
Castaway Restaurant is as laid-back as it gets, with its dining area right on the sand, offering beautiful views of the beach and the ocean. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxed meal, whether you’re starting your day with breakfast or winding down with dinner under the stars.
The vibe is friendly and unpretentious, ideal for beachgoers and families alike.
Menu Recommendation: You can’t go wrong with their freshly made Pizzas, which are perfect for sharing.
For a local twist, try the Seafood Pizza, topped with fresh local seafood and a sprinkling of herbs. Their Barbecued Meats are also a highlight, especially the grilled chicken served with a spicy local sauce.
Lipe Beach Resort
Lipe Beach Resort offers a casual dining experience with its toes-in-the-sand ambiance. It’s a great place to relax with a drink and enjoy a simple, tasty meal while watching the waves. The restaurant serves a mix of Thai and international dishes, catering to all tastes.
However the main reason people head this far up Sunrise beach is to get a photo with the huge wooden heart. It is a great way to say “I am in Koh Lipe!” With the Azure sea and white sand. We took a lot!
Menu Recommendation: The Thai-style Fried Rice is a great choice here, packed with flavors and served with your choice of chicken, shrimp, or vegetables.
For something more international, the Cheeseburger is a solid pick, made with quality beef and all the classic fixings.
Personal Recommendations for places to Eat on Koh Lipe.
Dining at The Box
My first visit to The Box was unforgettable, primarily because of its unique, minimalist design which perfectly complements the island vibe.
Sitting outdoors and kind of indoors, I indulged in their Pulled Pork Burger, which was a delightful surprise — the pork was tender and flavorful, with just the right amount of smokiness. It’s a modern twist on local flavors that shouldn’t be missed. However the Tuna steak is awesome as well.
A Memorable Meal at Nee Papaya Thai Food and BBQ
One evening at Nee Papaya Thai Food and BBQ turned into an impromptu feast when went a little made ordering.
Fish, prawns, morning Glory, Rice and more and all were succulent and the flavors were spot-on, embodying the perfect mix of Thai spices and classic barbecue. It’s casual dining, but the quality of food could rival any high-end restaurant.
Relaxed Breakfast at Elephant Café
Elephant Café was a daily ritual during my stay; their laid-back ambiance made it a perfect spot for morning coffee and people-watching. The tacos are exceptional. It’s also a great place to unwind after a day’s adventures, especially with one of their signature Mojitos in hand.
Discovering Flavors at Bombay Indian on Koh Lipe
Dining at Bombay Indian on Koh Lipe was a highlight of my trip and we come from Penang which has plenty of great curries.
The Chicken Tikka Masala was rich and perfectly spiced, a comforting reminder of home for those craving familiar flavors.
The friendly staff and vibrant atmosphere add to the authentic experience, making it a must-visit for anyone craving Indian cuisine.

So while, unlike its bigger Southern neighbor Penang, Koh Lipe is not famous for its food it still manages to punch above its weight.
